4 ways to help keep your dog protected and happy this summer

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Pinterest

With the country starting to reopen, don’t ditch your pet. While you come back to your favorite summer activities including hiking and swimming together with your dogs, it’s important to remember a couple of things first. Senior Technical Services Veterinarian at Bayer Animal Health, Dr. Zach Miller, shared these four simple tips to stay your pets happy and active within the coming months:

1. Transition your dog back to a traditional routine.

Many Americans are home thanks to COVID-19 restrictions, successively making their pets very happy. Over time, your dog may become won’t to the non-stop attention, so reverting to our normal schedules where many are going to be out of the house more often may cause separation anxiety among pets. to assist ease your dog into the transition, start by creating a predictable routine, and slowly getting them won’t to you not being home. Grab your keys and leave the house at an equivalent time each morning for a brief period. this may help them get won’t to the action of you leaving, without going cold turkey. As time goes on, you’ll stand back from home longer, until your pet does not experience anxiety.

2. Don’t forget to remain on top of flea and tick prevention.

During the summer months, pet owners tend to bring their pets along for his or her many outdoor adventures. While enjoying the good outdoors, whether you’re on a hike or going for a day walk, it’s important to assist protect your pets from pests including fleas and ticks. A recent survey conducted by the manufacturers of Seresto found that almost half (48%) of pet owners who use monthly flea and tick medication forgot to use the treatment a minimum of once over the past six months. These lapses in treatment can open pets up for brand spanking new infestations or cause expensive treatment setbacks. an excellent thanks to overcoming these forgotten doses is to instead use a flea and tick preventative that doesn’t require a monthly application — sort of a Seresto collar, which prevents fleas and ticks for eight continuous months. This eliminates the effort of remembering and applying monthly treatments and creates no mess due to its non-greasy formula.

3. Take care of stagnant bodies of water.

It’s natural to require to let your pets play during a body of water in warmer temperatures, especially if you start venturing out for hikes or camping. However, many pet owners are unaware of the danger that swimming in stagnant ponds or lakes may pose for animals. cyanobacteria, commonly found in stagnant bodies of water, are often potentially lethal to animals when ingested, causing particularly catastrophic harm to their liver. As a pet owner, it’s best to form sure your dog avoids drinking or playing in standing water with a clear film on its surface. Help your dog calm down by bringing many glasses of water alongside you instead!

4. Reach bent your vet to seek out out about any new protocols.

Because COVID-19 restrictions vary by state, one among the foremost important things to try to as a pet owner is proactively reach bent your local vet clinic to seek out out more about their current policies. If you’ve got an emergency, are they accepting walk-ins, or are they by appointment only? Are they currently doing wellness exams? By taking the time to seek out protocols of those locations, you and your pet are going to be prepared just in case of an emergency. There are still many unknowns about what the longer term will hold. Keeping your pet happy and guarded doesn’t need to be one among them!
